The beloved psalm follows an A-B-C-B'-A' pattern, moving from shepherding through the valley of shadow to dwelling in God's house.

AThe LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing.

BHe makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters.

CEven though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.

B'Your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.

A'I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
