Study the Jain Agamas, the canonical scriptures of Jainism transmitted from the teachings of Mahavira (599-527 BCE), the 24th Tirthankara. The Tattvartha Sutra by Umasvati (~200 CE) is the most authoritative single text in Jainism, presenting its complete philosophical system in 344 aphorisms: the nature of the soul, the categories of reality, the workings of karma, and the path to liberation. The Acaranga Sutra contains the earliest biographical accounts of Mahavira and his radical practice of non-violence (ahimsa).
