Buddha's opening teaching on the primacy of mind follows a chiastic pattern of cause and consequence.

AMind precedes all phenomena; mind is their chief.

BIf one speaks or acts with an impure mind, suffering follows as the cart-wheel follows the ox.

CIf one speaks or acts with a pure mind, happiness follows like a shadow that does not leave.

B'As a result, all experience is preceded by mind; mind is supreme.

A'Mind is their maker; their essential nature is mind.
